The IRS charges interest on and adds penalties to unpaid taxes.  The longer you wait to pay, the more these charges add up.  While the interest charges probably cannot be abated, the IRS will abate penalties upon a showing of reasonable cause.  However, the IRS generally will not determine whether the penalties can be abated under the reasonable cause exception until the taxes are paid in full.
